While we all know that good dental habits can prevent teeth cavities and gum problems, many people don’t know what these conditions are, what they look like, and when to see a dentist for their treatment. But not to worry; in this article, we list 5 common dental problems that can commonly occur and when is the right time to see your dentist for treatment. So, read on to find out more!
Tooth decay refers to a condition where the outer enamel – which is the hardest tissue in the body – is eroded due to acids released by harmful bacteria that reside in plaque and tartar. Once the enamel layer is destroyed, the inner, softer layers provide little resistance to the tooth decay process. As a result, a significant portion of the tooth structure is lost. The process by which the tooth layers are chemically degraded is known as tooth decay, while the resultant loss of tooth structure results in the formation of teeth cavities.
If you feel that one of your teeth has become sensitive to hot or cold foods and drinks, it indicates that the tooth decay process has begun. Now is the right time to seek dental treatment and get the cavity restored with a suitable filling material.
Bleeding from the gums indicates that there is underlying inflammation. This usually occurs when one ignores regular oral hygiene maintenance. As a result, plaque and tartar deposits form on the teeth and provide an excellent breeding place for harmful bacteria. These bacteria release toxins that destroy the gum tissue and cause inflammation. The first stage in the progression of gum disease is the swelling, tenderness, and bleeding from the gums. If you feel that your gums have become inflamed, or if they bleed whenever you brush your teeth or eat anything, visit your dentist immediately for professional teeth cleaning – a pain free dentistry procedure that involves removing plaque and tartar deposits – and restoring gum health.
Bad breath, also scientifically known as halitosis, can be caused due to various reasons. The most common reason for having bad breath is poor oral hygiene or underlying gum disease. Another cause of halitosis is eating strong-smelled foods like garlic, onions, or drinking alcoholic beverages. Some respiratory and gastric problems can also cause bad breath. Unfortunately, people suffering from bad breath cannot detect this problem themselves. Instead, they are often informed by their loved ones about this issue. Regardless of its cause, bad breath must be treated immediately as it indicates an underlying problem with one’s oral or systemic health.
A chipped or a cracked tooth should never be taken lightly. If the crack is superficial and does not extend deep, your dentist will simply restore it with a filling material. However, if the crack extends into the sensitive tissues of the tooth, dentine, and pulp, it can cause severe pain and discomfort. Delaying dental treatment, in this case, may lead to the inflammation of the pulp tissue causing inflammation. When this happens, the only solution to save the tooth is to perform a root canal procedure. So, dental help should be immediately sought in the case of tooth fractures or cracks.
A toothache can occur for various reasons, foremost being a tooth cavity that extends into the pulp tissue. A toothache can also be caused due to an infection or the gums or tooth roots. Another reason for dental pain is a tooth fracture or crack. Finally, something stuck between two teeth can cause significant tooth pain in some cases. Regardless of the cause of toothache, it should never be taken lightly. If you experience dental pain that is not relieved with pain medication, visit your Houston Dental office immediately for treatment as it may indicate an underlying serious problem.
Any discomfort, pain, or color change in the teeth indicates something with your oral or physical health. Therefore, these common dental problems discussed in this article should not be taken lightly, as they can extend into more significant, more severe issues if they are not treated timely. Whenever in doubt, there is no harm in consulting with your dentist!
