If you have moved into a new city or simply thinking of changing your dentist, you might be wondering whether it is better to choose a general or specialist dentist for your family’s dental treatment. This is a crucial question that almost every dental patient asks themselves. However, to understand why visiting a general dentist might be a better option than a specialist dentist, we must first understand their difference.
While both general dentists and specialists are qualified and licensed dental professionals, they differ in their qualifications and the duration of training they have undergone. For example, a general dentist holds a basic dental degree, while specialists undergo additional 3-4 years of clinical training in their specific fields to become specialists.
Now that we understand the difference between a general dentist and a specialist, let us look at some advantages of visiting a general dentist over a specialist.
General dentists are trained to diagnose, prevent, and treat dental problems, from dental infections to orthodontic problems, periodontal issues, and other tooth-related issues. This means that they can handle a variety of dental issues. On the other hand, specialist dentists focus mainly on their field. For example, an orthodontic specialist will only treat patients who have tooth alignment issues. However, a general dentist offers a much wider variety of dental treatments.
If you go to a specialist dentist, they will only focus on their field of specialty. If you require another treatment beyond their specialty’s scope, they may refer you to another specialist. In this way, you may have to go to different specialists for different types of dental treatments. This practice is not only time-consuming but also more expensive. On the other hand, if you go to a general dentist, they will take care of your entire family’s dental problems under one roof – saving your time and hard-earned money.
Typically, specialist dentists charge higher fees than general dentists. That is why you should go to a dental specialist only when you need specialized treatment. For example, if you have severe periodontal inflammation that requires professional deep teeth cleaning, it might be good to visit a periodontal specialist. On the other hand, if you simply need a dental filing, going to a general dentist will cost you less.
A general dentist will perform a detailed clinical examination on your entire family to diagnose any underlying problems at each checkup appointment. Hence, they closely monitor your family’s dental health and ensure that you remain protected from avoidable dental issues like tooth decay and periodontal disease. So, a general dentist will help you maintain good oral health and a beautiful smile throughout life.
Many dental specialists do not offer emergency dental services. So, in case you or a loved one has a dental emergency – like an oral soft tissue injury, a broken tooth, or severe toothache – the chances are that you will only find a general dentist offering emergency treatment in your area. In fact, most general dentists have a special hotline for their patients to reach them any time of the day in case of an emergency.
General dentistry offers many advantages over specialized dental treatment. Therefore, if you are looking for a dental practice that offers long-term dental care for your entire family, you should consider going to a general dentist in your area with a good reputation. At Royal Dental, we offer high-quality, pain-free, and affordable general dental services to our esteemed patients. So, book an appointment today and let us look after the oral health of your entire family.
