It is not uncommon to find the complaint of bleeding gums. Have you ever wondered why do your gums bleed? Normal healthy gums never bleed. When gums are bleeding, it’s a sign of a serious oral health problem. In this article, we’ll learn the top seven reasons why your gum can bleed.

  1. Gingivitis:

Gum inflammation or gingivitis is the primary indicator of infection in the gums. It can be due to many reasons. One of the main reasons is poor oral hygiene associated with plaque and calculus formation. Gum disease can be easily prevented by maintaining good oral hygiene and treated if detected early. If left untreated, Gingivitis can progress to a more serious disease of gums i.e., periodontitis which may result in bone loss or gums recession.

  1. Aggressive brushing or flossing:

It is important to learn the correct brushing and flossing technique. Improper use or technique of brushing or flossing can lead to more damage than good to your teeth especially to your gums which may start bleeding excessively. In the worst cases, gingiva starts to recede, leaving behind the roots exposed and thus the complaint of dentine hypersensitivity starts along with gum bleeding.

  1. Change in lifestyle and oral habits:

Stress and anxiety sometimes manifest as a change in one’s lifestyle and oral habits. Off and On brushing and flossing, using more force and pressure than normal are quite associated with stressful conditions which may lead to gum bleeding. Chewing on hard and sharp objects like pieces of bone can sometimes injure the gums, and increase bleeding, fortunately, this is temporary and gums heal quickly.

  1. Medications:

Certain medications like Calcium channel blockers can cause swelling and inflammation in the gums, which can easily bleed during routine oral health care. It is best to inform your dentist if you’re taking any medications before the start of dental treatment. So appropriate wound management can be done to avoid the risk of future complications.

  1. Pregnancy:

Due to hormonal changes during pregnancy, there is an increasing tendency for gums to bleed. Maintaining optimum oral hygiene is of extreme importance in pregnant patients to avoid unnecessary dental complications.

  1. Trauma from appliances:

Sometimes gums get injured to appliances within the oral cavity e.g., braces treatment. The wires can prick soft tissues in the oral cavity and may lead to increase bleeding tendency. These can be easily managed using wax at the ends of the wires or brackets.

  1. Medication conditions:

Patients with bleeding disorders are at high risk of bleeding. So, all necessary precautions should be taken to prevent injury to gums and soft tissues.

Summary:

  • Healthy gums never bleed.
  • Bleeding gums is a sign of infection and may indicate the need for a dental checkup.
  • Regular dental checks up are essential in preventing common oral diseases.
  • Always seek your dentist’s help if you have any signs and symptoms of bleeding gums.
