Dental implants are titanium screws that are placed in the jaw and are supported by overlying artificial teeth. The key benefit is they distribute chewing forces to the underlying bone, thus preserving the integrity of the bone supporting the implant. This is the main reason for their widespread popularity and patient acceptance. Though the implant success rate is tremendously high yet you need to avoid the following seven mistakes to prevent unexpected implant failure.
One of the main reasons for implant failure is poor oral hygiene. Implants need the same care as we do for natural teeth. If we do not follow good oral hygiene practice, plaque and calculus will deposit around implants leading to inflammation around implants i.e., peri-implantitis which is the primary reason for implant failure.
It’s better to avoid smoking to increase the life of implants. Smoking decreases the success rate of dental implants. It’s also better to avoid alcohol as well along with smoking to increase implant life.
You might not be an ideal candidate for dental implants if you have poor health history. Bone diseases can decrease the chances of implant success since they are placed within the bone. So it’s vitally important to have healthy bones with good quality and quantity. Conditions like diabetes should be well controlled to allow the successful healing of dental implants.
If you have missing teeth, you should replace them as soon as possible. Delay teeth replacement for too long results in bone loss, consequently the need for bone grafting before dental implant surgery, and this increases the overall time and cost of the treatment. Therefore, it’s a big mistake not to get teeth replaced as soon as they are removed.
Your dentist may advise you to follow some precautions following implant surgery to allow smooth healing. If you do not follow your dentist’s advice it may lead to early implant failure.
Your dentist may recommend you soft diet following implant surgery and to avoid heavy chewing around the implant area. It will protect the healing site from unexpected trauma and allow smooth healing.
The experience and training of dentists also play a role in implant success.
