Orthodontic treatment options available in Houston, TX practice include traditional braces and Invisalign

Invisalign | Houston TXAt Royal Dental, patients in and around the communities of Houston, TX have access to a myriad of dental solutions. For patients who are interested in realigning their smile, we offer two types of orthodontic treatments including traditional braces and Invisalign.

Traditional braces

Traditional braces are the more commonly known form of orthodontics. The dentist will glue metal brackets on each tooth that needs to be moved and use a metal wire connecting them all to achieve proper alignment of the dental arch. These arch wires are adjusted during each visit to the dentist, often tightened to ensure that the teeth are moving. The treatment can take several months and sometimes more than a year, depending on how severe the misalignment of the smile is. Patients will be able to have them removed at the end of treatment and will use a retainer they will wear at night to maintain the results.

Invisalign orthodontics

Another option for patients to consider is that of Invisalign. Invisalign works differently than conventional braces. Instead of using metal brackets and wires to move the teeth, Invisalign patients will wear clear aligner trays. A series of trays are made using digital impressions of the current smile to gradually move the teeth into proper alignment. Each tray is worn day and night for two weeks before progressing to the next tray in the series. By the time patients reach the last tray, they will have reached their final alignment. Many patients choose Invisalign because the clear trays are difficult to notice when patients are wearing them, offering a more discreet treatment than conventional braces.

Which is right for me?

At Royal Dental, our team will evaluate the patient’s smile and determine which treatment they are better suited for. Patients with more severe misalignment are often better suited for traditional braces versus Invisalign.

Understanding orthodontics

Orthodontics is a field of dentistry that focuses on the alignment of the teeth in the dental arch and within the bite. For many years, orthodontics only consisted of traditional braces, where metal brackets and wires were used in repositioning the smile. Fortunately, there are alternatives that have come along, including clear aligner therapy. The team of Royal Dental offers both solutions for patient consideration.

Traditional Braces

For patients with moderate to severe misalignment, traditional braces are often the best treatment option. Traditional braces start with metal brackets being glued to the front of the teeth, which are then connected with a single wire across the dental arch. These are adjusted regularly to help reposition the teeth within the dental arch over the course of several months. These are the most common orthodontic treatments used for children, teenagers, and adults seeking better alignment of the arch and bite.

Invisalign orthodontics

Patients who want a more discreet option may want to consider the benefits of Invisalign orthodontics. Invisalign is sometimes referred to as clear aligner therapy. This method utilizes special plastic trays that are custom-made in a series. Each tray is worn for two weeks until patients reach the end of their treatment—and have obtained their newly aligned smile! Invisalign is often chosen by our patients who have mild to moderate misalignment because it is discreet, easy to use, and effective in achieving the desired results quickly and effectively without the use of brackets and wires.

Traditional Braces compared to Invisalign Orthodontics

Orthodontist Houston, TXAt Royal Dental, our experienced providers offer a broad range of treatment options for patients to consider when it comes to restoring the smile. For patients who are faced with misalignment of the natural smile, there are common threads in terms of the solutions available. Poor bite alignment may be addressed with orthodontics, but we have more than one option for patients to choose from.

What Are Traditional Braces?

When advised that orthodontics may be needed to improve cosmetic and functional alignment of the dental arch and bite, many patients think immediately of traditional braces. These are metal brackets glued to the teeth that are required for movement and are attached together to realign with the use of a metal wire. This is one of the most well-known methods of realignment for teeth with malocclusion. However, many of our patients are not interested in this treatment because of its appearance. They are worried about covering their smile with unsightly brackets and wires for months, sometimes years.

What Is Invisalign?

Instead, our team at Royal Dental offers an alternative known as Invisalign. Invisalign is a different type of orthodontic treatment that eliminates the need for brackets and wires. Instead, Invisalign uses clear plastic aligner trays that are custom-made using digitized impressions of the natural teeth to create a series of trays to accomplish the desired results. The number of trays in a series will vary from patient to patient based on the severity of the misalignment at hand. This is why an evaluation is needed to determine candidacy first.

Does it Get Any Better Than Invisalign?

Invisalign Houston TXMany people express a desire to have a straighter smile. This is nothing new.  Even before we had formal research to confirm that the smile is one of the first things that stands out about our appearance, evidence suggests that humans tried several techniques to enhance their teeth. Why we care so much about having a nice smile doesn’t matter, because there are several reasons we could give. What matters is that we have ways to achieve just about any intended goal. In the Royal Dental offices throughout the Houston area, one way we do this is with Invisalign.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an alternative to metal braces that is appropriate for many patients. Teens and adults alike can benefit from this system and its ability to correct misalignment, overcrowding, gaps, and even bite issues. Invisalign isn’t just clear braces; it is an aligner method that straightens teeth using BPA-free plastic trays that can barely be seen in the mouth.

The fact that Invisalign is the most discreet method of straightening teeth available today is great, but that isn’t enough to make it also one of the best systems around. The reason why Invisalign is so successful is that a great deal of effort goes into the fabrication of every aligner. After the initial consultation, direct imaging of the mouth is used to create a 3-dimensional model of the teeth as they are at the onset of treatment. The Invisalign software processes original imaging to develop a sort of short-length film; one that digitally moves teeth from where they are to where they need to be. From this film, a series of aligners are made. It’s quite fascinating!

What You Get from Invisalign

Of course, you get a straighter smile after you complete Invisalign treatment. If you’ve researched this treatment method at all, you know that you also get to keep eating your favorite foods and you get to bypass the discomforts that go along with braces, like small nicks and cuts from metallic points. A few additional benefits that occur with Invisalign include:

  • More efficient oral hygiene. When your teeth are straight, your brushing and flossing practice will achieve better results in the long run.
  • Gum health. When teeth are aligned, the gum tissue around them can fit around each tooth more tightly and securely, which is good for preventing gum disease in the future. Just remember to keep flossing!
  • Jaw alignment. When opposing teeth fit properly, the jaw doesn’t have to sustain as much stress when biting and chewing.

Invisalign: When Will I See My Dream Smile?

Invisalign Houston TXHaving a straight smile is something that is often related to a sense of confidence. We admire straight smiles, especially when they are also radiantly white. Because we find a straight smile so pleasing, the presence of crooked or crowded teeth in our smile can cause a lot of frustration. In recent years, we have been fortunate to see expansion in the way we treat concerns related to the straightness of the smile.

Invisalign is a prime example of this advancement in dentistry. Although there are numerous benefits to teeth-straightening with this system, many patients still feel a bit of urgency around seeing the results they have long desired. How long will it take to straighten your smile with Invisalign? Let’s take a look at the process of orthodontic correction to see if we can answer this question.

The Task of Moving Teeth

Orthodontic treatments like conventional braces, invisible braces, and Invisalign share one objective: to move teeth. There is something that has to happen before teeth can move to their ideal situation, they need to become loose within the periodontal ligament. So, moving teeth is a two-phase process; first loosening and then moving. Remember, there is a final phase of orthodontic treatment, retention with a retainer.

The way that Invisalign completes this process is through the constant, gentle exertion of force on teeth.  Some aligners will focus on one are or even one tooth, while others will be more widespread regarding pressure. To maintain the consistency of pressure needed, patients are instructed to change aligners every two weeks. The number of aligners that are prescribed is determined by the degree of correction needed; and here is where we start to see a glimpse of the timeframe for treatment.

Invisalign is more than a cosmetic dentistry treatment. This protocol can correct mild to moderate bite issues in addition to gaps, overlapping, and turning. With each change in aligners, patients get to witness the transformation of their smile. When aligners are worn as directed (about 22 hours a day), a standard course of treatment may take anywhere from six to eighteen months, depending on how much correction needs to be achieved.

Packing up and Heading out: How to Travel with Invisalign

Packing up and Heading out: How to Travel with Invisalign | Royal Dental | Houston TXIt’s hard to stay put during the summer months. The coastal breezes beckon us to dip our feet in the water. The mountains make us swoon with soft starlight. Campfires come calling and faraway lands feel fantastically frivolous. Are you getting ready to pack up and head out of town? If you are in the midst of Invisalign treatment, you need not feel held back. You should, however, plan carefully. Traveling with Invisalign is not difficult if you know what needs to be done.

Invisalign Travel Tips

  • Don’t let vacation get in the way of progress. Talk with your dentist about getting the next set of aligners for your treatment before leaving town.
  • Having an extra set of aligners is beneficial, as well, in case the set you are currently wearing gets damaged or lost. Talk with your dentist about the best protocol for such a scenario (switch to the next set or go back to the last set that had been worn).
  • Pack aligners and extra carrying cases in baggage that is easy to reach. Checked bags for flights may not be the best place for any aligners due to the risk of loss or delay.
  • Remember to practice good hygiene when away from home. Road trips and long flights provide ample opportunity to neglect brushing and flossing. A small hygiene kit can keep you fresh and healthy.
  • When flying, an aisle seat may be more comfortable to allow you to brush after meals without disrupting neighbors.
  • It is often recommended that Invisalign patients rinse their mouth when they cannot brush. Be careful to use water from safe sources. If there is a question about “drinkability,” use boiled water to rinse and brush aligners.
  • Keeping a bottle of water with you at all times may be an easy way to keep the mouth clean on longer excursions. Just remember to brush as soon as you can to prevent plaque buildup from occurring.

Invisalign: Keeping it Real

Invisalign Houston TXInvisalign treatment continues to help teens and adults correct the alignment issues that keep them from fully loving their smile. The team at Royal Dental conducts traditional orthodontic treatment as well as Invisalign, and we can understand the strong desire that many patients have to avoid the common effects that go hand in hand with braces. We know them, and you do, too: scrapes or cuts on the cheek or lips, deprivation of some of your favorite foods.

Without a doubt, Invisalign has made it more convenient and comfortable than ever to straighten the smile. At the same time, patients must remember that there are aspects of Invisalign treatment that do put them at risk for dental problems. We want to keep it real so you can avoid the potential pitfalls of wearing straightening aligners.

The Plaque Problem

Plaque is a biofilm that sticks to your teeth. It is made up of saliva, food debris, and bacteria. Yuck. You don’t see it, and it has no odor, so you may not even realize when plaque starts to build up, but your teeth and gums will. Plaque isn’t something that accumulates from one dental visit to the next; it is a substance that builds up very quickly over the course of a day. The more plaque that sits on teeth, the greater the risk for dental problems. It’s pretty simple.

But That’s Not All . . .

Plaque isn’t the only substance that sits on teeth. According to new research, the ingredients from commonly consumed beverages also linger. Most of these ingredients are either acidic or sugary. Both are bad. Really bad. Acidic ingredients in sports drinks, for instance, can lead to erosion that progressively worsens over just one week’s time.

Protecting your Pearly Whites

The whole point of Invisalign is to help you love your smile. The last thing we want is for you to need fillings or other restorative treatment to counteract the effects of your initial treatment. The good news is it’s easy to combat plaque and deteriorating acids.

  • Brush morning and night, including your aligners.
  • Floss every day.
  • RINSE after meals and beverages, including your aligners. Acidic ingredients soften enamel, which can then be easily abraded by brushing.
  • Drink water throughout the day to maintain saliva flow.

Some Straight Talk about Invisalign Teeth Straightening Treatment

invisalign houston tx | Royal DentalWe consult with a large number of teens and adults who want to know if they are a good candidate for Invisalign. The team at Royal Dental understands the preference for this method of alignment correction and, although we do offer conventional orthodontic care, do our best to accommodate our patients’ desires. If you have heard about all the advantages of Invisalign treatment for a straighter smile, you need to also know the straight facts about this method.

  1. Invisalign is not an accelerated course of treatment. Some offices promote the quickness of Invisalign as a prime advantage of treatment. It’s not. Every person has different needs and, while one patient may complete treatment in a matter of months, another may need more than a year. The advantage of Invisalign is that it is comfortable and discreet, not that it is accelerated.
  2. Steer clear of stains. Coffee drinkers may find this little tidbit a doozy: that morning cup of coffee will have to be shortened. Many coffee drinkers don’t just drink; they sip – for hours. This can’t happen with Invisalign because drinking with the aligner in will cause it to become yellow or brown. Sipping without the aligner, though, means too much time without the straightening fixture in place.
  3. Full comfort is not a guarantee. Another advantage Invisalign patients enjoy greater comfort. This stems partially from the use of custom-fit aligners versus brackets that can poke soft tissue. Braces also get adjusted every so often, which can cause soreness. By the same token, switching one set of aligners for the next could also create a bit of discomfort. Pressure is still a natural aspect of moving teeth so that a mild ache may develop with each progression into a new aligner.
  4. You just might lose weight. Clearly, Invisalign treatment is beneficial for its smile-improving capabilities. In some cases, though, a hidden benefit is that the decrease in snacking diminishes caloric intake sufficiently enough to drop a few pounds!

Here’s Why Invisalign may be Better

invisalign houston tx | Royal DentalThe team at Royal Dental loves helping patients fall back in love with their smile. Dentistry has advanced so greatly that we now have several ways to make the necessary improvements. We can help you brighten up your smile, restore full integrity to damaged teeth, and even correct misalignment using the Invisalign system. Our experience with Invisalign has frequently brought us face to face with a common question: Is Invisalign better than braces?

Is Invisalign better than braces? Some would say yes, but that would be a knee-jerk reaction. Of course, this system seems better than braces! It doesn’t require you to sit beneath glued-on brackets and wires! It doesn’t get between you and your favorite food, or between you and your confidence. There are many advantages to the Invisalign protocol. That is undeniable. But what is really behind that question about “which is better” is the aspect of efficacy. Can Invisalign get the job done? That is the real question!

A Look-Back

Initially, the Powers that Be approved Invisalign for the correction of minor alignment issues. A turned tooth, or a slight overlap. The use was limited, to say the least. Because of this, the perception was set that Invisalign is just cosmetic braces. The thing is, the developers of this system did not hang up their hats at this point; they kept working. They measured and tracked the positive sides to their system, and when they missed the mark in achieving the intended goal. What this did was advance the overall treatment protocol.

Now, Invisalign is a lot more than a cosmetic braces system. It is much more than a convenient treatment, too; it’s effective! Patients with an overbite, a crossbite, an underbite, with crowded teeth or gaps between teeth, with turning and other concerns, can all find the resolution they seek with Invisalign. Furthermore, because there are no brackets, research has discovered that patients tend to have better oral health throughout their course of treatment. Now that’s a bonus!

As great as we think Invisalign is, we cannot say that it is the best approach for every patient. We’d be happy to consult with you to determine your needs. Call (713) 330-7700.

Oral Care Tips for Teens wearing Invisalign

invisalign Royal Dental Houston TXMany of our child and teen patients begin treatment programs during the summer months. If your teen started his or her Invisalign treatment this summer, one of the important aspects to address before school starts is how to keep teeth, gums, and the mouth optimally healthy once academic and extracurricular activities are in full swing.

Invisalign is an appealing method of straightening teeth largely because there are no braces involved. There may be small “buttons” that are used here and there to prompt certain types of movement, but that is about it; and patients love this about the Invisalign system! Not only are there no braces – meaning brackets and wires – in the Invisalign treatment plan, the aligners that are used to move teeth are removable. This creates a whole lot of convenience and freedom. It can also create some misconceptions about oral hygiene.

Let’s Talk Teeth
There are really no circumstances under which taking care of teeth becomes less important. There are, however, circumstances that call for heightened attention to hygiene. Invisalign treatment is one of them. This is true even though aligners are removed for brushing and flossing, and here’s why.

Invisalign aligners work by gently forcing teeth into alignment, just like conventional orthodontia. These aligners, however, fit completely around teeth, front and back, up to the gum line. Teeth are covered nearly 100% of the time. This can create prime conditions for oral bacteria to accumulate on and in between teeth. The only way this is inhibited is by brushing, flossing, and rinsing.

Invisalign patients do themselves a huge favor by brushing frequently; after every meal, if possible. For the teen in school, this means there is a need to carry a toothbrush in a backpack or purse. It could be challenging to have teens brush while at school. The alternative, if hygiene is optimal at home, is to rinse the mouth well after meals away from home.

Taking great care of teeth during Invisalign treatment means less chance of decay and gingivitis. It can also help a teen (or adult patient) maintain fresh breath, a vital aspect of human interaction!

Teens have enough concerns without having to worry about crooked, unhealthy teeth. Learn how Invisalign can help your teen get a better smile. Call our Houston office at (713) 330-7700.
