Understanding orthodontics

Orthodontics is a field of dentistry that focuses on the alignment of the teeth in the dental arch and within the bite. For many years, orthodontics only consisted of traditional braces, where metal brackets and wires were used in repositioning the smile. Fortunately, there are alternatives that have come along, including clear aligner therapy. The team of Royal Dental offers both solutions for patient consideration.

Traditional Braces

For patients with moderate to severe misalignment, traditional braces are often the best treatment option. Traditional braces start with metal brackets being glued to the front of the teeth, which are then connected with a single wire across the dental arch. These are adjusted regularly to help reposition the teeth within the dental arch over the course of several months. These are the most common orthodontic treatments used for children, teenagers, and adults seeking better alignment of the arch and bite.

Invisalign orthodontics

Patients who want a more discreet option may want to consider the benefits of Invisalign orthodontics. Invisalign is sometimes referred to as clear aligner therapy. This method utilizes special plastic trays that are custom-made in a series. Each tray is worn for two weeks until patients reach the end of their treatment—and have obtained their newly aligned smile! Invisalign is often chosen by our patients who have mild to moderate misalignment because it is discreet, easy to use, and effective in achieving the desired results quickly and effectively without the use of brackets and wires.

Living Life with Braces

Now that you have taken on the smart way to achieve straighter, more beautiful teeth which are braces, you have to get used to having it in your mouth from now on. Having braces is not as easy as it sounds. There would be a dental contraption attached to your teeth to make them move, which is something totally new for you.

Don’t worry! We will give you tips on how you can still enjoy life with your braces around.

Chewing matters

One thing that you would instantly be worried about is how it would feel to eat with braces. Sooner or later, you can already eat like you used to, but during the first few days, you may want to stick with soft foods to avoid discomfort and to protect your orthodontic appliance. Also avoid foods that are chewy, crunchy, or sticky, like bagels, chips, or gum. You are welcome to take this chance to drop a few pounds as well.

Soreness is normal

Once you have braces, the mouth and teeth may feel generally sore and sensitive to biting pressures. A quick solution to this is to rinse your mouth with warm saline mouthwash, or water with salt. If the discomfort is severe, you can resort to prescribed pain medications to alleviate it.

Brushing and flossing are vital

Of course, you will be more obliged to brush and floss your teeth regularly if you have braces. This routine keeps teeth and gums healthy. When you have braces, food particles could easily get stuck on the wires and bacteria could soon accumulate there.

Invisalign vs Braces: Which is the Best Option for You?

Royal Dental is always searching new and innovative dental solutions for you and your family, but sometimes the newest thing is not the best option. For example, the popularity of Invisalign has changed the way braces are viewed and more people are visiting orthodontists than ever before. As your dental provider we are proud and excited to offer Invisalign to our patients. Do you know what the differences between Invisalign and braces are? Are you a candidate? And if so, what is the best option for you?

We’ve put together this comparison of Invisalign vs braces to help you make an informed decision on which option is best for you:

Cost Difference

According to the October Journal of Clinical Orthrodontics, Invisalign costs $5,300 for most adults. This approximately $500 more than the cost of traditional braces. As reported in the October Journal of Clinical Orthodontics the average cost for a set of traditional adult is braces is $4,800.

Invisalign is known to work best for mild to moderate cases and when it comes to horizontally misaligned teeth. Braces are effective for almost all cases of misaligned teeth. They work well on horizontally and vertically misaligned teeth.

Treatment Time:

The majority of Invisalign cases will take between six and 18 months. Some cases could take two to three year, and some could take as little as little as four to six months. Treatment time varies from case to case, but the average time is from one to two years. It’s important to follow the orthodontics instructions and to keep regular appointments to maintain a treatment timeline on schedule.

The strength behind Invisalign is the device is nearly invisible. It’s made of clear, plastic aligners that are custom made to fit over and cover your teeth. Braces are typically made with stainless steel brackets and wires that are connected to the outside of your teeth. They are highly visible.

A slight discomfort is usually reported in the beginning of each new stage of treatment. Each stage represents the aligners being adjusted to straighten the teeth. Typical braces are usually uncomfortable and will often prick or scratch the gums. Broken brackets and wires can require immediate treatment from your orthodontist.

Oral Hygiene:

Invisalign is easy to use and great for hygiene because the aligners in your mouth can be removed and cleaned as often as necessary. When you brush your teeth, you can brush your aligners as well. They can also be soaked and cleaned in a denture cleaner while you eat. Braces are more difficult to maintain because food and plaque can get trapped in the tiny spaces between braces and wires. Accumulation and gingival inflammation may occur so it’s best to brush your teeth and floss after each meal.

When it comes to choosing between Invisalign or braces you should make an appointment with your dentist and ask which option would be the best for straightening your teeth. While Invisalign is typically considered a more comfortable and more expensive option, the most important factor in straightening your teeth is to follow the advice our your orthodontist and keep regularly scheduled appointments.

We have numerous patients who visit us at our Houston dental office asking about how to achieve optimum oral health despite having Invisalign. 1. Brush the right way using the right type of toothbrush.

By using an interdental toothbrush, start brushing at the outside of your teeth and brush at a straight angle using circular strokes. When cleaning the areas between your braces, you can efficiently brush by angling the toothbrush up and down. In addition, don’t forget to brush your molars (the chewing surfaces in your teeth).
