If you notice that you have dark spots on your teeth, you may be worried and confused. Where is this coming from and how can I treat it?

What Causes These Dark Spots?

There are many possible causes of dark spots, and each one will require a different treatment. These include:

Surface Staining

Dark and potentially harmful substances can really do a number on your teeth, at least when it comes to their color. Coffee, tea, cigarettes, and alcohol can cause your teeth to darken. This is perhaps the easiest thing to correct, as there are many basic tooth whitening methods.

Interior Stains.

It might seem odd that your teeth can be stained from the inside out, but it’s true. These are often caused by medications or excessive fluoride exposure. Because they’re on the inside, these stains are much harder to treat. In fact, there isn’t really a way to get rid of the stain. Some external whitening treatments might help, but usually your best option will be to cover it with a veneer.

If your tooth is internally damaged due to some sort of trauma, the tiny tubes in your tooth can fill with blood and cause dark spots to appear. In this case, the best treatment approach is probably a root canal.

If your tooth is in various states of decay, especially if you have a cavity on the surface of your tooth, a cavity can appear to be a black spot on your tooth. In this case, the bad news is that you have a cavity, but the good news is that the treatment is just as simple as filling the cavity.

What You Should Do

If you are worried about dark spots on your teeth, you should go see your dentist. At the very least, he or she will be able to give you peace of mind, and chances are that your dentist will be able to help your teeth regain and retain a bright, white color.
