Tooth Fillings

Dental Fillings in Houston and Surrounding Areas

There is now new technology that allows you to replace old silver and gold fillings with a more natural looking, composite filling. Composite fillings are bonded to the tooth and research has proven them to be about 90% as strong as healthy natural tooth material.

What Is a Dental Filling?

In years past only silver-toned, metal amalgam fillings were available to fill teeth. These metal fillings were not only unnatural in their appearance but could also cause other problems for dental patients. While less expensive, overtime metal fillings could give teeth a grayish appearance causing the tooth to appear damaged. Additionally, because the metals used in amalgam fillings were much more rigid than materials naturally found in teeth their rigidity could lead to additional decay and damage to the remaining, natural parts of the teeth.

Modern dentistry has evolved to develop tooth-colored fillings that are made from a composite resin of acrylic plastics. These fillings will not cause your teeth to discolor or gray. Tooth-colored fillings are designed to mimic the natural dentin found within your teeth and therefore have a better bonding property to the tooth surface and offer better insulation during temperature changes.

Are There Any Risks Associated with Receiving Tooth-Colored Fillings?

Unlike metal fillings, tooth-colored fillings are relatively risk-free. Metal amalgam fillings can discolor teeth and lead to unusual sensitivity when consuming hot or cold foods and drinks. It is important to note that with tooth-colored fillings, less of your existing tooth structure must be removed prior to the procedure and you should be able to chew almost immediately (or as soon as the effects of your local anesthesia have worn off).

Additionally, tooth-colored fillings do not contain mercury and are therefore safer than metal alternatives.

What Can a Dental Filling Help Treat?

If a patient’s tooth has become decayed, cracked or fractured a dental filling may be necessary to repair the tooth and prevent further damage or decay. Fillings are common, inexpensive options for repairing minor tooth damage and should be considered when the existing tooth structure is stable and easy to work with.

What Are Some Benefits of Fillings?

Benefits of receiving tooth colored fillings include:

  • Beautiful, natural-looking appearance.
  • Completed in a single office visit.
  • No leaks.
  • Stronger treatment, less likely to crack or become damaged

What Will My Teeth Look
like After Receiving a
Dental Filling?

Tooth-colored fillings are created to match the tone and color of your existing teeth. Therefore you will only feel relief from your decayed or damaged tooth, and only see a solid colored tooth that looks as natural as it did prior to your procedure.
